Nintendo posted a loss of £142 million in its last quarter, and while it was a poor result it still beat the same period last year when a larger loss was registered. The poor result is largely due to slowing DS and Wii sales, and in fact the Nintendo 3DS sales surge is the one major positive to take out of the report. However, as the company was still taking a loss for every 3DS unit sold during the period, the increased sales paradoxically weighed down the result. On a positive note, Nintendo are now saying that as of today they are no longer selling Nintendo 3DS with a loss, and from here on in they will make money on the hardware.

Nintendo 3DS sold 1.86 million units during the quarter, compared to a modest 710,000 units the same period last year. Wii sold 710,000 units and DS registered 540,000 sales. As of June 30 2012, Nintendo has sold 19 million 3DS consoles and 52.81 million 3DS games.

3DS no longer sold at loss
The larger and more pricey Nintendo 3DS XL will no doubt help 3DS hardware become profitable.
