Ever since the release of the Wii U, Nintendo have struggled financially. The handheld 3DS console continues to do well even if it is in decline, but without a stronger home console in their arsenal the company has not been able to reach anywhere near the numbers of the massively successful early years of the Wii.

That being said Nintendo president Tatsumi Kimishima has faith that things will turn around in the near future, helped along by the new NX console as well as Nintendo's platform for smartphone games. He believes these areas will help restore "Nintendo-like profits":

"It has been our priority to take a close look at areas of our existing business where the revenue and expenses had become unbalanced, and to make sure that we corrected this balance," Kimishima explained in an investor meeting. "The question was to pick one area with which we will be able to achieve Nintendo-like profits, but I would like to suggest two areas. One area is our NX business, and another is our business for smart devices. I believe that keeping these two endeavours on track will be key to achieving Nintendo-like profits".

Meanwhile we still do not know exactly what the NX console is, nor when it will be released. The majority of the fans are hoping for a new home console, but there has also been talk of another handheld system, or a fusion of the two. In light of Kimishima's latest statements such a fusion seems quite likely:

"We have made a number of changes to our corporate structure to gear up for our new ventures. For example where development was split between handheld and home console divisions in the past, we have unified these activities for both hardware and software development, and the exciting new ideas coming from development are evidence of the progress being made as a result of that unification", Kimishima concludes.

Thanks, MCV.
