Back in 2002 when Gametrailers.com launched it was a different internet, and games journalism was very different than it is today. Video was still something exotic. But thanks to great shows and massive amounts of trailers of games the website quickly grew and in 2005 it was bought up by MTV Networks. The site remained big, but perhaps things started to take a turn for the worse as the first decade approached, and in 2014 MTV sold off the site to Defy Media. Gametrailers continued on, but many of the senior staff were let go and some major shows were cancelled.

Today, it was confirmed that Gametrailers.com is closing down, effective immediately. A message was posted on the Facebook page, with some closing thoughts and good byes.

"We're proud we helped bring this world into being. That is the legacy of GameTrailers. We're grateful to all of our fans who helped make us successful. Thank you for your continued support over the years. It has been an adventure."

One has to wonder if today's gaming journalism and its heavy focus on video content would have been the same without Gametrailers. Here's hoping those who remained until the end find new jobs soon.

Firewatch was the last game reviewed by Gametrailers. A fitting end?
