Activision has today announced a deal with Tencent Holdings that will see Call of Duty Online delivered to Chinese gamers.

The game has been in development for two years, and will be free-to-play (although it will be monetised through the sale of in-game items). Tencent has agreed an exclusivity deal with Activision for a game that has been designed specifically for the Chinese market.

Bobby Kotick, CEO of Activision Blizzard, said: "We are very excited about our relationship with Tencent and the opportunities for gaming in China. We think China is one of the most exciting places in the world for us to grow our business and to develop innovative new games."

Tencent president, Martin Lau, said: "We are thrilled to work with the world's premiere game developer and publisher to bring this much-awaited title to Chinese game players.  We believe Call of Duty Online will attract tens of millions of loyal fans in China."

As mentioned, the game will be free-to-play, and Chinese gamers will be able to customise their gear via an in-game store. Call of Duty Online will feature several multiplayer game modes, and Special Operations missions based on the Modern Warfare strand of the franchise.
