Funcom's CEO Trond Arne Aas, has announced that he is standing down from his position at the MMO specialist, and will be taking on a "new and freer role in the company".

The announcement comes just a week after Funcom announced a deal for a Lego MMO, and it arrives on the same day as the release of their anticipated MMO, The Secret World.

"I have served as CEO of Funcom for several years and it has been an exciting and rewarding experience," said Aas in his official statement.

"Funcom has developed immensely during that period and I am very proud of the fact that Funcom has been established as one of the most credible and respected companies in the MMO-space with a strong technology base and a strong product portfolio. Funcom now has two very exciting products heading into the post-launch phase: 'The Secret World' and 'Fashion Week Live'."

"The company's financial position is strong and the foundation of the company's long-term product and technology strategy is in place... It feels like a very natural point in time for me to make the transition to a new and freer role in the company, but I will remain committed to the company, both as a major shareholder and as an employee."

Obviously Aas thinks now is an ideal time to step aside (COO Ole Schreiner will now take the reigns), but the decision to announce on The Secret World's launch day still seems a little odd.
