If you don't know the story, back in the day Sony and Nintendo agreed to make the SNES PlayStation together, a game console that could play both discs and cartridges.

However, just after Sony announced the console at CES 1991, it emerged that Nintendo had double-crossed their one-time collaborators and had instead done a deal with Philips, leaving Sony somewhat red-faced.

Of course, it was a turn of events that led Sony to releasing the PSOne, which turned out well for them, so every cloud has a silver lining.

The reason that little story is relevant today is that a prototype model of the SNES PlayStation has surfaced, when one individual tasked with throwing out a box of junk when his company went bankrupt discovered the said box actually contained the device pictured below.

According to the post one of the individual in question's co-workers back in the day was called Olaf, and speculation is rife that this might well have been Olaf Olafsson, one time CEO of Sony Interactive Entertainment and certainly someone who might have had access to such a prototype.

Regardless of who misplaced the hardware, it's thought that very few of these consoles were ever made, thus it's exciting to see one out in the wild, so to speak. We're left wondering how much one of these would be worth to a serious collector, and whether it even works. Either way, it's a piece of gaming history that's well worth taking note of.
