League of Legends devs Riot Games has warned gamers that their database has recently been hacked.

According to Riot, hackers were able to access users private information, including email addresses and encrypted account passwords. The company warned that although the passwords are all encrypted, they think it likely that many of the codes were simple enough to be easily cracked. They suggest all users change their passwords immediately.

In a post on their website, Marc Merrill (President) and Brandon Beck (CEO) explained the situation. Here are the main points, though if this applies to you then you can read the full statement here.

"Hackers gained access to certain personal player data contained in certain EU West and EU Nordic & East databases.

The most critical data accessed included email address, encrypted account password, summoner name, date of birth, and - for a small number of players - first and last name and encrypted security question and answer.

Absolutely no payment or billing information of any kind was included in the breach.

Even though we store passwords in encrypted form only, our security investigation determined that more than half of the passwords were simple enough to be at risk of easy cracking."

They also report fixing the issue in question, and that an investigation is currently underway to ensure that it doesn't happen again.
