Swedish publisher/developer Starbreeze has just announced the acquisition of the Valhalla technology, a development package intended to power their new generation efforts, such as Overkill's The Walking Dead, and to contribute to reaching "a new level of high quality graphics and productivity". It means Payday 2 will be the last game based on the Diesel 2.0 engine.

The studio has been working with Valhalla creators since last year, and the cutting-edge engine has been four years in development. Starbreeze will be the new owner starting June 12th, after expected approval.

"Valhalla represents the next generation with a true browser -based AAA game engine. Valhalla's graphic cloud engine will revolutionise the art pipeline by providing an integrated development environment for rapid and creative game development across multiple studios and teams," reads the official announcement. "Valhalla supports not only 3D but is fully virtual reality (VR) ready, and proofed on several headsets currently on the market. Starbreeze intends to use the Valhalla engine in Overkill's The Walking Dead and Storm, as well as in other future games and applications."

Overkill's The Walking Dead is expected to hit the market in 2016. It's unknown whether this announcement could mean a further delay, but as the game is still on a very early development stage, it's been probably based on the new engine since its inception.
