Microsoft kicked off their E3 presentation with a gameplay demonstration of Halo 4 that certainly caught everyones attention.

Halo 4

After watching the Infinity crash landing on the planet surface, Master Chief sets off to intercept. We're in a jungle environment, the friendly voice of Cortana ringing in our collective ear, her face sits on the left of the HUD. An assault rifle cuts through a selection of Grunts, Jackals and Elites.

Though it's not long before we meet a new adversary. An insect-like being with a helmet that lifts to reveal a glowing skull bathed in red. The unknown enemy has an drone-esque flying sidekick.

The Chief takes him down with a few choice shots, and then picks up the dropped weapon, a Light Gun. It's pretty cool, but not as good as the Scattershot that is picked up not long after. Cortana remarks that it is 'Forerunner' in design.

We also see some defence droids; at a first glance they look like local wildlife, but before long they're working with the other creatures, much like the Covenant did in previous chapters of the Halo story.

Before the end we also see a heat sensor in the HUD that helps the Chief spot enemies in the dark. The demo wrapped up with the tagline "An Ancient Evil awakens".
