Parents in Cheshire have been warned that they could be reported to social services should they allow their children to play age inappropriate video games.

A letter sent by the Nantwich Education Partnership group, which represents sixteen schools based in the county, warns that there could be consequences for parents who allow their children to play over-18 games, explaining that certain games contain unsuitable levels of violence, and that letting young children play them in some cases might be considered neglect.

The group, which mainly consists of primary schools, states that games such as Call of Duty and Grand Theft Auto are unsuitable for young gamers, and that playing such games (and/or accessing certain social media sites) can lead to "early sexualised behaviour" and leave them "vulnerable to grooming for sexual exploitation or extreme violence."

Mary Hennessy Jones, the head who drafted the letter, said: "We are trying to help parents to keep their children as safe as possible in this digital era. It is so easy for children to end up in the wrong place and parents find it helpful to have very clear guidelines."
