Sony won't refund PS4 hacker victim

Curious policies in place as victims of hacking have little recourse.

A Reddit user called Kadjar was a victim of a identity theft during a Playstation 4 hack. $600 was stolen from him, as well as his PSN account that was removed from his console, while another had been made primary.

Kadjar contacted Sonys customer support to sort things out, but it didn't go as planned. Sony only refunds up to $150, and despite making several calls, he got nowhere and is even in danger of losing his digitally bought games and content because of something that isn't his fault. Now he has summed up his complaints on Sony on Reddit:

• Sony will only refund $150 of the $600 that was taken.
• The money will be in PSN credit, and not refunded into the bank.
• If the user escalates the payment dispute with his bank, his account will be banned.
• If his account is banned, his purchased licences for games, such as The Last of Us Remastered, will be wiped.
• If the licences are wiped, there is no way of restoring them.

And it gets worse. Even if he would be redeemed, his PlayStation 4 will not be able to run his account for 6 months, per Sony policy. That means he is completely locked out of the account with all his content unless he buys himself another PlayStation 4. Kadjar writes:

My goal here is bring attention to a few of Sony's bad customer service policies in the hopes that they'll change them, and to encourage them to add more security measures to PSN (such as multi-factor authorization, which is supported by both MS and Steam)."

Kadjar ends his rant (that also contains proof of his story) by writing:
"don't have your credit card on file with Sony - if something were to happen, you won't be taken care of."

He links to three other similar cases with the Sony support and security. The problem seems to be fairly common and we've had one of these unfortunate stories ourselves among the Swedish Gamereactor community with a guy who wasn't refunded despite the fact that he never got the money he paid for in his digital PSN wallet.

Sony won't refund PS4 hacker victim

Naturally, this is only one side of the story of we have yet to hear Sony's side of the argument, but clearly some of these policies (if correct) are decidedly problematic. If this concerns you, remove your credit card details from your PSN account.
