The past year we've seen the head of Microsoft's Xbox division, Phil Spencer, sporting t-shirts tributing Rare's Battletoads more than once, and speculation went through the roof when he posted a tweet saying: "Got to play the new @RareLtd game today. Rare building a uniquely Rare game, as it should be. Great visit to the studio."

At GDC this week Eurogamer got to ask Spencer about Rare's 30th anniversary. Without going into specifics regarding which game the studio is working on, he did say this:

"Rare's a very special studio," and "We recognise that it's their 30th year. And that's an important time - without giving away too much."

However, one individual who has reportedly been confirmed as a former Microsoft employee has shared some interesting rumours on Reddit, stating that Microsoft has put in quite a lot of work into a Conker reboot. They suggest that Microsoft wasn't interested in doing it themselves, and Rare was never in the mix.

"MS wanted Conker out the door really quickly, because they wanted to reintroduce audiences to a bunch of older IPs that MS were planning on rebooting for 2016-17, like Perfect Dark and Banjo," said the unnamed source.

In our opinion this leaves it wide open as to what game is actually being worked on for the studio's 30th anniversary, but we still have our hopes set on Battletoads.

"Battletoads might just end up being one of the best titles to come out of an Xbox Game Studio this year."
