First expansion for Guild Wars 2 announced

The first expansion for Guild Wars 2 has been announced by ArenaNet at PAX South, it's called Heart of Thorns, and a few details have been posted on the MMORPG's website. Fans can expect to see revisions to the mastery system for characters beyond level 80. On top of that players will be venturing in the heart of the Maguuma Jungle, on the way enjoying "challenging" group missions, plus new open-world jungle maps, events, boss battles, and story events.

With new profession specialisations players will also be able to unlock previously unavailable weapons, plus new traits, skills and mechanics. An entirely new profession was also mentioned called Revenant, who'll combine heavy armour with "otherworldly power of the mists". As well as that lot there'll be a new PVP game mode called Stronghold. Finally, there'll be a World vs. World addition in the form of the new Borderlands map.

New screens and a trailer were also published alongside the announcement, although as yet there's no word on the planned release date..
