Ubisoft's new DRM system

Constant connection required

Ubisoft will be using a new DRM (digital rights management) system for their upcoming PC releases starting with Assassin's Creed II and Settlers 7: Paths to a Kingdom. PC Gamer have tried it out and spotted a few not so pleasant details about it. The system essentially requires the player to be connected to the Ubisoft DRM server at all times and if you loose connection for any reason you will be thrown back to the main menu and all your progress since the last save will be lost. The upside is that you won't need the disc in the drive when playing, and you will be able to install and play the game on any number of computers. It still seems like a high price to pay that puts the player's experience at risk.

Update:

Ubisoft issued the following statement in a FAQ:

"...If you lose your Internet connection the game will pause while it tries to reconnect. If the Internet connection is unable to resume, the server will have stored your last saved game..."

Sounds a little better, and we suppose no system is perfect. Oh, except for the DRM free system of course. But that isn't exactly perfect for the publishers...

Thanks. I agree I am against this DRM garbage. I however broke down and absolutely had to own Assassins Creed II for the PC. However aside from this one guilty pleasure I will do my part to boycot this.

If anyone is reading this and confused as to what DRM is please open another tab and use google you will learn very quickly why people are against it.

Thanks for the info. I won't be bying the game now. Or other crazy DRM schemes, for that matter.

If enough people would boycot this, they could see where to get their money from. News like this makes me want to hack the games till they are green and blue.

This is absolutely horrifying. So from now on, this means that we are basically renting the game, we don't own it anymore.

Ubisoft, if you read this, reconsider, because this will not go well with stores that sell it and customers who buy these games. Absolutely, and totally fail on you part..
