The Friday after Thanksgiving is called Black Friday, primarily because of the havoc caused by millions of shoppers descending on American stores as the holiday shopping period kicks off in earnest.

Everywhere has a sale on - well, nearly everywhere - and even when you venture online it's no different. Here's the highlights we've spotted so far, and we'll update the list as the week goes on:

Steam's Fall Sale is about to kick off, so expect plenty of discounts and flash sales there. That one's running until December 1, and they usually save their biggest discounts until Black Friday itself, so tune in on Friday for the best savings. That's our advice at least.

Microsoft is selling cheap games on both Xbox One and Xbox 360, although your region will determine what's on sale and discounts you can get, so don't get your hopes up until you've switched on your console.

Similarly PlayStation's Double Discounts promotion continues. It's not a Black Friday sale exactly, but we thought we'd mention it in the interests of equality. We'd also mention Nintendo, again in the interests of equality, but they're not doing much of a sale at the moment: head here if you don't believe us.

Not a sale as yet, but Green Man Gaming have a tempting discount code that'll save you a chunk off a game (it's valid until tomorrow - who knows what they'll do after). We'll see if they've got something up their sleeve for later in the week.

The Humble Store currently has a Sega-themed sale on at the moment (that fits with their latest Bundle), but we'd expect that to change in the coming days. We'll update you with more details when we have them.

Gamersgate currently has a pre-Thanksgiving sale on the go, with timed sales for dedicated shoppers.

Amazon is offering a series of flash sales (or you can venture over to Amazon.com - although we're not sure what their delivery policy is, you have been warned).

Game.co.uk also has some nice online deals, including some decent current-gen game discounts on recent releases. They're also offering timed and limited deals, so stay tuned (or venture in store).

EA's Origin has some really nice digital deals on their storefront, with a healthy selection of games on offer, including some real classics in amongst all the guff.

And finally, if you head over to the store on Battle.net you can grab a couple of bargains, including cheap Starcraft and World of Warcraft.

Bundle Stars just emailed to tell us about their Supernova Sale, which is basically a selection of Steam-based indies at discounted prices.
