Halo: The Master Chief Collection, the updated compilation that includes Halo: Combat Evolved, Halo 2, Halo 3 and Halo 4, is set to release on Xbox One on November 11.

The four game compilation will include the multiplayer elements of all the numbered Halo games, although the ranking system across the different playlists will not reflect the originals. Instead they'll actually be the same across the four, although rank will be calculated via Halo 2's levelling system.

"Each playlist within Halo: The Master Chief Collection uses an independent skill-based ranking system that is identical to the leveling system from the original Halo 2," 343 told IGN, no doubt making old school Halo fans happy in the process.

"The system uses the same exact XP requirements as the original Halo 2; players will earn XP when they win and lose XP when they lose, and total XP will determine their rank. You will have a skill-based ranking per each playlist; we ultimately decided not to have a 'master' ranking across all four games combined, given that player skill and approach varies radically between game chapters."

The studio rep continued: "Additionally, we've also modified matchmaking to use skill detection, which will put players into the fairest matches faster than any Halo game to date. In ranked hoppers, players will be evaluated after each match and can go up or down in ranks depending on how well they perform. Social matches will also be available for players who prefer a more relaxed play experience."

Those who, in recent Halo games, have bemoaned the lack of the old 0-50 ranking scale will no doubt be pleased that 343 are bringing back the old system for Halo: The Master Chief Collection. We look forward to seeing it in action once the game launches later this month.

REVIEW. Written by Mike Holmes

"It has aged exceptionally well, a fact that speaks to Bungie's original quality as well as the restorative nip and tuck overseen by 343 Industries."
