In Japan a "zero" rating (equivalent of 18+) is a retail death sentence and publisher Bethesda wanted to avoid that for The Evil Within (or Psycho Break as it is called in its native Japan). So, the released a heavily censored version at retail with "Gore Mode" DLC thought to bring it up to the same level of gore as its Western brethren. However, Famitsu (via Kotaku) have now revealed that even with the Gore Mode DLC the Japanese version remains less visceral than the Western release. This includes main character Sebastian Castellanos not being completely blown to bits by bombs and some corpses not being quite as recognisable as humans.
"If you can stomach some old school design then you're in for some proper stomach turning events."
And its sequel is going for free next week.
Players will also be able to claim Eternal Threads until October 26.
Bethesda's Pete Hines won't confirm whether or not they might be coming, though.
"it is a very good method to immerse yourself in your environment," says The Evil Within creator.
