When Ubisoft announced the season pass for this autumn's Assassin's Creed: Unity in September, it was made clear that pass holders would receive a standalone 2.5D adventure called Assassin's Creed Chronicles: China, along with additional DLC.

It' still not clear whether this game will be available outside the purchase of the aforementioned season pass, although the word "standalone" would suggest so, but in any case Ubisoft seems to have bought into the 2.5D genre.

How so, you might ask? Well, as reported by Eurogamer, Chronicles: China will not be the sole side-scrolling spin-off in the series, as Ubisoft are already planning several other adventures of the same kind:

"We really liked the side-scrolling idea, like Mark of the Ninja, and we thought it would be a really great way to explore some of the other universes we've created", Assassin's Creed: Unity creative director Alex Amancio explains. "One thing that's really cool is that every one of the chapters of this game will be in the art style representative of that era in time. This is why Shao Jun's game is like Chinese ink - very black and red."

Among other potential games mentioned are an adventure set in Ancient Egypt, a time and place ranked highly when Ubisoft asked the fans where they would like to see the Assassin's Creed franchise go in the future:

"I don't want to spoil the surprise, but the idea is that we have this rich universe - we're going to use it," Amancio concludes.

While Assassin's Creed: Unity is being developed by Ubisoft themselves, the work on Assassin's Creed Chronicles: China is being made by Climax Studios from the UK.

"You'll scream, swear and pound your head against the coffee table, and then you'll reload the game, because when it works, it really works."
