We caught up with Two Tribes co-founder and designer Collin van Ginkel to find out more about the Toki Tori developer's latest project Rive. These days the developers is only made up of three people (including van Ginkel) and thus they built this new game from the technical foundation of the most recent Toki Tori title.

"Rive was called Rewind for a very long time," says van Ginkel. "It was a game we'd been trying to make for, I don't know, seven years. And the concept kept changing and changing and changing, and basically what it is now... It is a old-school 2D shooter/platformer, but with a really new school execution and with a unique hacking mechanic. So instead of just shooting enemies you can also hack them and change their behaviour."

The hacking mechanic is certainly something that sets Rive apart from the competition.

"Basically, we want you to be able to hack everything, but not from the start. So you collect hacks or source codes of how the robots work and then you can change their behaviour. So for instance if you have a turret who's automatically aiming at you could invert its aim. So you upload a hack and it will start shooting away from you. So it could become a weapon for you instead of against you. We want to try and get everything in the game hackable, but I'm not sure if we have a good idea for every enemy yet."

Two Tribes aim to have Rive finished next year and are targeting PC as well as a new consoles (PS4, Wii U and Xbox One mentioned) for the release.
