The funding campaign for the self-proclaimed spiritual successor to S.T.A.L.K.E.R. - Areal - has been in the news quite a bit of late, and certainly not for the kinds of reasons that the developers over at West Games will have been hoping for.

First there were questions raised regarding the claims made by the development team, and accusations of using copyrighted materials in the campaign. Secondly there was outright accusations that the campaign itself was a scam. Thirdly was the small matter of the now infamous Putin letter, and the Areal team calling out journalists who they felt had given them unfair coverage. Most recently there was the suspension of the campaign by Kickstarter.

Although no reason was given as to the reason behind the suspension, it is widely rumoured that it had something to do with a suspicious spike in funding at the end of the campaign that saw the game's $50k target surpassed. However, the story doesn't end there, as West Games has started calling for funding once more, only this time they're doing so via their own website.

So far they've raised nearly $12k, with the target once again sitting at $50k. We're still concerned that this relatively low sum (in terms of game development) won't be enough to fund the game through to completion, but that's just our take on the matter (and for all we know, they could have secured funding from elsewhere). As far as West Games and Areal goes, they're certainly persisting with the project, even in the face of negativity and bad publicity. Time will tell whether that turns out to be a good thing or not.
