According to a report, publishing giant Electronic Arts is about to layoff over 500 staff, a figure which represents between 5% and 11% of the company's entire workforce.

The suggested reason for the layoff is poor sales of Battlefield 3 and Star Wars: The Old Republic. Startup Grind revealed that they have several sources confirming the move, which comes in the wake of EA spending $30 million USD on marketing Battlefield 3, with sales not meeting lofty internal expectations. It's a similar story with MMO The Old Republic, which is already seeing a decline in subscription numbers.

If this report is true, it represents a massive blow for the publisher. EA has had tough time of late, as the report points out the company keeps losing key management staff to Zynga, they've recently paid top dollar for PopCap, share prices have dipped from a high of $61 to its current value of $16, and to top it off EA was recently voted the worst company in America. Ouch.
