Two new games debuted at the top of the UK charts this month, and hardware sales got a huge boost as a result.

Champagne corks will no doubt be popping over at Ubisoft, after it was confirmed that Watch Dogs was not only the biggest launch of last week, but the biggest ever launch of a new IP in the UK, an honour that was previously held by 2011's L.A. Noire (and Watch Dogs outsold L.A. Noire by an impressive 58%).

Watch Dogs is also the 17th best ever launch for a game, and Ubisoft's best ever first week of sales for a game. It sold best on PlayStation 4 thanks to exclusive content and a hardware bundle, and contributed to a 94% increase in hardware sales week-on-week for Sony's console.

Nintendo won't complain about coming second to a success story like that. Mario Kart 8 debuted in second, in the process boosting hardware sales for the Wii U by an incredible 666% week-on-week (82% of those sales were the new Mario Kart bundle).

Last week's chart-topping game, Wolfenstein: The New Order, dropped into third. FIFA 14 and Minecraft (PS3) clung onto their top five finishes. Borderlands 2 popped back into the top twenty thanks to release of the game on PS Vita.
