Watch Dogs release date official

A release date of May 27 has been confirmed for the eagerly anticipated new IP from Ubisoft, Watch Dogs.

Rumours have been building steadily (here, here, and here), with a placeholder date of June 30 listed by one major retailer. Today a couple of sources revealed the May 27 date, and Ubisoft has now moved to end speculation, confirming that the game will release on a variety of different platforms in just over two months.

It was confirmed a while ago that the Wii U version had been delayed beyond the game's planned release on Xbox One, Xbox 360, PC, PS3 and PS4, so the studio could "focus the team's resources where they could have the broadest possible benefit," and this was echoed in today's announcement.

However, gamers on other platforms don't have long to wait before they finally get their hands on the game - which was originally due to be a launch title for the new-gen consoles before its delay was announced last year.

"We are pleased to be able to reveal to gamers all over the world the new release date for Watch Dogs," said Ubisoft EMEA senior VP Geoffroy Sardin. "We are extremely confident that the additional time we afforded the dev team to refine and polish the game will be more than worth the wait."

It was also confirmed that PlayStation (both PS3 and PS4) owners who pick up the game will get an additional 60 minutes of gameplay via PSN, though exactly what that'll be has yet to be clarified.

"We're really excited for the launch of Watch Dogs on both PS3 and PS4 and are confident that it will prove to be one of the standout games of 2014," said Sony's Michael Pattison. "It's a unique and visionary game and we believe that the exclusive content available via PSN will not only excite gamers, but showcase how PlayStation is a preferred destination for Watch Dogs."
