Since the launch of DayZ on Steam Early Access last month, the alpha version of the open-world zombie survival game has already attracted 800k downloads, in the process making around £16 million for Bohemia Interactive.

The game's success has gone above expectations, and gamers have been rightly asking whether the unexpectedly large injection of cash would have any impact on the development of the title.

Over the weekend, Dean "Rocket" Hall said on Reddit: "We (bohemia and I) had very ambitious plans for 2014 already, however this amount of sales was completely unexpected. Honestly, 250k within a quarter was what I would have considered a success. So to move nearly 800,000 in under a month is crazy."

"We'll be finalizing our roadmap in mid January, but it is safe to say that this kind of result will be having a very positive effect on that roadmap," Hall concluded, which will be music to the ears of the already sizeable community of gamers that are playing the alpha version of game.

The early access version of DayZ is available to download from Steam for £19.99. It's far from a finished product (for example, when we took a look over the holidays, objects dropped from one's inventory take an age to appear on the ground - there's plenty of bugs and glitches), but that hasn't stopped the community that formed around the original Arma 2 mod from jumping on board at this early stage (and let's be honest, they're already used to the odd technical hiccup).

DayZ

REVIEW. Written by Mike Holmes

"While fun is there to be had and DayZ is still able to offer up uniquely intense flashes of quality, it's not enough to make this an essential survival experience in 2019."
