Audio transcription

"Let's get away, fly away I'm feeling radiance on my face Sunshine through the clouds, yeah Rainbow all around us I spread my wings, fly away Love resists me at my feet Love led me away, yeah Dreams whisper into my ears I'm sitting here with Tetsuya Mizuguchi, the founder of Q Entertainment and the producer of such games as Sega Rally, Res and Lumines How does it feel to be in Malmö today?
Yeah, such a beautiful city. I spent three days in a beach house I took many pictures, that was great So maybe that's inspiration for a new game?
Yeah, maybe yes So speaking of inspirations, that was the topic of your session today here at Nordic Game How do you start out with a new product? Do you search for new ideas?
Or is it just things that come to you naturally? How is that process?
The inspiration suddenly comes, always And I think somebody gives me that kind of feeling But I think we need a long time, it's kind of a prologue So if you think about something always, and you put a very small inspiration or fuzzy but a huge question in your mind for a long time I think it's only if you want something, and you feel something The big chemistry comes like that I think the game designer or creator or whatever I think you should be creative, you should keep to creative That kind of things you should have, many many many things So you're never turned off, you're always a game creator, is that what you're saying?
Yeah, but I think it's in my interest or my inspiration Sometimes moving, hoping So I never said about that today But I just started to make a music and a music video by myself I will put this music video into Luminous too And I think that you can watch on YouTube or somewhere soon It's called Heavenly Star, kind of a big inspiration Kind of a nostalgia concept, like glass And I kind of make the music video using that kind of colors, lights, moving with music And getting happy with people, with shared people So what kind of things can I make? That kind of inspiration So do you feel freer to pursue these kind of things now that you have your own company, Q Entertainment Rather than when you were working at SEGA?
I have freedom now So that means when I work with SEGA I love SEGA But I work with SEGA and just only one client So if SEGA said no, I couldn't anymore But now I'm a freelancer We can work with any people, any client, any platform So that means if you have any inspiration, new inspiration You can do anything Some of the games that Q have published, like Meteos Is not maybe your own creation And you said in an interview that you didn't want to be credited with someone else's work like that Maybe people say that Meteos is Mitsuguchi's game or something like that And there is also Every Extend Extra, which is of course the freeware game How do you feel? Do you want to bring in a lot of people?
Is that something that is part of the Q concept?
So like Meteos, I had the first very fuzzy inspiration So that was the people's brain changing Young people dating and talking with emailing something on the mobile phone I think 20 years ago it never happened like that I think the human being's brain changing, multitasking Watching the movie Matrix opening, many things falling down So if I touch this kind of many things in one time with two screens It must be fun, kind of things I told this kind of inspiration to Sakurai-san who made the game design of Meteos So he, hmm, very interesting And he made the basic concept of Meteos A week later, wow So I think he did a lot And Every Extend Extra, those are the young people in Q Entertainment They wanted to, they found Every Extend on PC market So this is a free game, The Wasp And everybody play And the young guy came to me I want to make this game with the music, gorgeous music and the visual experience Hmm, you can do that And you should use the quantizing program like res, luminance So, okay, I'll do that And I just, you know, just watching You can go, you can go, you can do that And the cheering the people So, yeah, I think it couldn't, you know, it's impossible to watch everything But now, I think the Q Entertainment, not only me About 50 people, new talent coming Who wanted, wants to create some online entertainment or casual music something So my role is changing and changing a little bit So, yeah, of course I want to use my energy and creative power into something But this is my personal thing As a company So we will, you know, go farther and farther Far away, together The first game that Q made was Luminous And it became a huge success Sold very well Were you surprised by this?
Yeah, a little bit surprised Because when I made the Res and Special No.5 You know, music-based game Isn't that so popular in United States?
So, that means the music game, no market in United States Or European market, you know And the puzzle game, no market at all before the Luminous So, you know, just only Tetris something And I think the European countries are the same I talked with some publishers about Luminous, first Luminous Mostly everybody, puzzle game, music-based game, no market I'm sorry, you know But I had a confidence This is new and this is very PSP original game So that's really, you know, happy and I'm really glad So now you're bringing Luminous to, you're bringing the sequel to PSP And you're bringing Luminous Live to Xbox Live Arcade And Luminous Plus to PlayStation 2 Can you tell us a little bit about Why you choose to make three new games with Luminous?
The Luminous concept, it's not like only game It's like the new visual music contents Including over 100 tracks And you can play this And you can enjoy this And you can watch this, listen to this I think the Luminous Live also you can buy online You don't need to go to shop And you can change and you can edit So I think the music industry We want to make, prepare, you know We want to prepare any style to enjoy the game in Luminous Even if on mobile phone So the kind of new musical artists that are in Luminous 2 How did you go about choosing those?
Were they your decisions or was it in collaboration with someone?
So mainly my decision And so the many opinions I had And as a result I decided From any genres, from any type of music Any colors, any type of video And not only the female-male balance I think it's really good to start The first Luminous music video concept So in your presentation you said that In your early career you were more like an engineer And you then moved on to entertainer Is there any chance that you were Do you sort of think like Maybe I should do another game where I'm the engineer again?
I think it's kind of the wave First, we got the technology I think 15 years ago That was kind of the high-res, high-tech technology In the real-time 3D graphics And not so gorgeous like now Yeah, so this is the first counter So everybody wanted to make some real something But now we have already gorgeous, rich technology power I think it's a huge canvas And not only real thing I think we can draw and we can make The new reality Like including abstract something So I'm really interested in To make kind of the res What is the next experience of kind of res Yeah, maybe we can draw That kind of abstract But it's high-res, high-tech something And it makes some chemistry With the music and the visual effects With maybe drama or something Yeah, we have meaning We have a lot of means to make that So I look forward to seeing What's next from Tetsuya Mitsuguchi And I think we have to wrap it up now Our time is up Thanks for coming by See you next time"
