The Indie Thread
Posts in thread: 18GR® | Fez has captured my imagination, and i've not even downloaded it yet. It looks like a charming and intriguing game (though i'll reserve final judgement till I've actually played it), and an excellent advert for what is possible with a small team and a low budget. What other indie games are you lot playing? Here's the place to post recommendations and 'I wouldn't touch it with a barge pole' warnings. |

GR® | Hard one to call, as what is designated as "indie"? Fez got a big push as a XBLA title - but there's a whole wing of Indie Games on Xbox Live Marketplace. I keep hearing about I Made A Game With Zombies in it, but have yet to get round to trying. And some of the "dating" titles on there are just hilarious. |

Redaktör | The term indie game is kinda loose today. Fez was picked up by Microsoft and I'm not sure it really qualifies as being indie apart from it being developed by a small team. The lines are blurred. I've heard a lot of good things about Dear Esther, but haven't gotten around to it. I think we should try and stay clear of labels, and just look for interesting and novel ideas in games, whether they come from established and funded developers or some guy sitting in his bedroom coding away. | Strategist Community Manager | I don't have that many indie titles. I considered buying the Potato Sac off Steam when they had a campaign, but I had to reconsider. I've spent many hours playing 2D Boys' World of Goo though. And of course Minecraft although that almost doesn't count anymore. ••• Abusus non tollit usum! ••• Moderatorsjef @ Gamereactor® |

GR® | Frozen Synapse by Mode 7 (PC/Mac) is worth a look for anyone who likes to keep it tactical. |
| |
| Strategist Community Manager | I guess Shattered Horizon is an indie game. I got it with a mouse from CM Storm, and I've spent quite a few hours playing it so far. I find it difficult but it's entertaining. ••• Abusus non tollit usum! ••• Moderatorsjef @ Gamereactor® |

GR® | Further to my comment at the top of the thread: I have now played Fez and, once my brain adjusted to mechanic, I found it very enjoyable. It's one of those that is probably worth playing, even if you just go for the demo. A unique experience. |

Moderator | I've been buying these indie bundles from left and right and now I have like a dozen which I haven't even tried in my steam library and external hdd But here's a few recommendations Dungeons of Dredmor Hilarious somewhat tactical 2D dungeon crawler. The game offers rather deep game mechanics, a lot of character customization options and loot. The game doesn't take itself too seriously so you can find plenty of jokes and references. Legend of Grimrock Another maybe more old-school dungeon crawler where 4 prisoners are thrown in to a mysterious and huge dungeon full of monsters, puzzles and traps. The games graphics and gameplay are pretty good for a indie game made by such small team. >_> |

GR® | I've been playing quite a bit of Antichamber in recent days: http://www.gamereactor.eu/reviews/62361/Antichamber/ |

I just paid for the Beta of 'Prison Architect' - It's a nice little management sim that reminds me of Theme Park. I think they've still got a way to go in development and need to really work on developing a story/mission based mode rather than just free play but it has bags of potential. I also tried 'Seduce Me' - just because it has been marketed, reviewed and commented on everywhere and I wanted to see what the fuss was about. For the record, it's shite.

GR® | Although it's very short, Thirty Flights of Loving is a very clever piece of interactive storytelling and well worth checking out (especially if you can pick it up in a sale). |

GR® | Several members of the GRTV team have been playing the beta for The Showdown Effect. Check out Bengt's preview here: http://www.gamereactor.eu/previews/63521/The+Showdown+Effec t/ |

Been checking out quite a few indie games in the guise of various bundles. Some are really good but some are really poor. Greed: Black Border has me hooked and TRAUMA is a quirky, trippy little title.

| Strategist Community Manager | Mount and Blade is a great indie title. I enjoy the concept but still have problems learning the mechanics and controls of the game. ••• Abusus non tollit usum! ••• Moderatorsjef @ Gamereactor® |

Moderator | Quote Baltharan: Been checking out quite a few indie games in the guise of various bundles. Some are really good but some are really poor. Those bundles really give nice visibility to games that might have gone unnoticed by many. Some of these are bad sure, but made few pretty good findings like Analogue: A Hate Story which might be more of a interactive novel than a game but really enjoyed the plot. The developer could have made it a bit more accessible and interactive tough, would have loved to explore the ship instead of just log files, even if in just old-school 2d point and click adventure kind of a way. >_> |

GR® | The Basement Collection is a nice collection of games by Edmund McMillen (of Super Meat Boy fame). |

Moderator | Anyone here tried Desura? It's pretty good place to find real indie titles to play and support. You might even get the chance to influence the development more than let's say on your typical indie release on steam. They also host their own humble bundles on http://www.indieroyale.com/ which is often full of good but less known titles. >_> |
| |
GR® | Yeah, Desura is a great place to check out, and pick up, great little indie games. Quite a lot of stuff that's waiting in the Steam Greenlight queue can already be purchased here, so if you see something you like waiting to land on Steam, it's worth check Desura. |
