The Philadelphia 76ers, a North American Professional Basketball team, have become the first North American pro sports team to dip their toes into esports. Two teams have been acquired, including the relatively new League of Legends team Apex, and the established Team Dignitas. The latter have been around for thirteen years and have teams for multiple games, including League of Legends, Overwatch and Counter Strike.

According to the Dignitas website, Apex and Dignitas have been merged under the Team Dignitas banner, bringing the different teams under one roof.

"We are thrilled to have the opportunity to partner with such an experienced and respected group of entrepreneurs to provide Team Dignitas with the resources it needs to join the ranks of elite competitors," said the 76ers Co-Managing Partner David Blitzer. "Adding esports to our portfolio will provide us with many new ways to extend and strengthen our existing sports brands and grow championship caliber franchises."

This is not the first time a professional sports team have gotten involved in esports, though the 76ers case is arguably the most significant. Earlier this year, the German football team VFL Wolfsburg signed a 22-year-old FIFA player, and UK Premier league team West Ham quickly followed suit.

This is certainly fantastic news for esports, which is finally getting the attention it deserves from mainstream organisations. What are your thoughts on the acquisition? Will Dignitas be better off under the wing of a Pro Basketball team? Let us know below!
