What games are coming to PS4 and Xbox 720? Part 1

Text: Bengt Lemne

We've assembled what we know and what is rumoured into one giant next generation speculation piece.

Next-gen is finally out of the closet and we've taken a look at some of the confirmed, rumoured and likely next-gen titles you may see over course of the next few years. Now some of you may say, but what about Wii U? Isn't that next-gen? Well, that may be for historians to determine at a later date, and technically it may very well part of the same generation as PS4 and Xbox 720 in a similar way that Dreamcast was part of the GC/PS2/Xbox generation. However, in this article we focus on the next-gen efforts of Microsoft and Sony and what games you may see arrive on those platforms.

[Confirmed]

Knack
PS4
Developer: Sony Studios Japan

Different, sleak and directed by Mark Cerny. There's every reason to be excited about the prospects of this PS4 exclusive. It's something different and that's what next-gen should be all about.

Killzone: Shadow Fall
PS4
Developer: Guerrilla Games

Even if this game looked great at its unveiling, a lot of people were expecting even more. Perhaps folks still remember the pre-rendered announcement video of Killzone 2 from E3 2005 and are wary because of it? Killzone: Shadow Fall certainly looks like your typical shooter/rollercoaster ride, but perhaps Guerrilla Games have one or two surprises up their sleeves.

Driveclub
PS4
Developer: Evolution Studios

Play movie

It sounds a lot like Forza Horizon, and if the rumours are to be believed the idea of making this a Gran Turismo spin-off was axed by Sony in Japan. The developers at Evolution Studios are experienced, but they have been leaning more towards arcade-like racing experiences in the past. Certainly one to keep your eyes on, though.

Infamous: Second Son
PS4
Developer: Sucker Punch

The third game in the Infamous series features a new hero - Delsin Rowe - seven years has passed since the events of the first games and the world has changed. This could very well be a game released at launch or soon after as the Infamous series has a strong following.

Media Molecule game
PS4
Developer: Media Molecule

Media Molecule are making some kind of create stuff/perform with PlayStation Move style experience that is really hard to explain and that doesn't really have a title at this point. It's different, but it was hard to feel the same kind of enthusiasm about it as Alex Evans and his colleagues on stage.

Deep Down
PS4 (likely Xbox 720)
Developer: Capcom

Play movie

Deep Down was the working title for the impressive fantasy game Capcom showed off during the PS4 reveal. It kind of looked like a possible Dragon's Dogma sequel that had taken hints from Dark Souls, but as for now we're in the dark on this one. Nothing was said of exclusivity so for now let's assume it's heading to the next Xbox as well.

Final Fantasy XV
PS4 (likely Xbox 720)
Developer: Square Enix

Play movie

Was it Final Fantasy XV Square Enix teased the announcement of during the PS4 reveal? Surely it must be. It would be really strange to start off a new generation with some kind of spin-off. Whatever the case may be, don't expect the next big Final Fantasy any time soon.

Diablo III
PS4 (possibly Xbox 720)
Developer: Blizzard Entertainment

Big news at the PS4 conference as Blizzard came on stage to announce Diablo III for PS3 and PS4. Some kind of partnership between Sony and Blizzard was referenced, and it remains to be seen what that means for a possible Xbox appearance. We also haven't heard what kind of extras the PS4 version may feature compared to the PS3 versions that's due to arrive first.

Destiny
PS4 (likely Xbox 720)
Developer: Bungie

Play movie

Sony scored a major victory as it was confirmed that Bungie's Destiny would feature exclusive content on PlayStation platforms. It's also heading to Xbox 360 and almost certainly to Xbox 720, and it remains to be seen what Bungie have in mind to compensate the legions of Halo fans that want to play Destiny on the next Xbox. The "shared-world shooter" is not due out this year, but when it arrives it may just be the game to disrupt the current state of the shooter market.

Watch Dogs
PS4 (likely Xbox 720)
Developer: Ubisoft Montreal

The big winner at last year's E3 Watch Dogs was shown off on PS4 during Sony's presentation. We got to see some open world elements, even if we weren't as blown away by it as the first time we saw it in Los Angeles. It's ambitious enough that it's difficult to see how this concept can be fully realised on PS3/360, nevertheless Ubisoft plan on releasing it across a wide range of platforms (including PC and Wii U).

The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt
PS4 (likely Xbox 720)
Developer: CD Projekt Red

While some of us at Gamereactor are more excited about the prospect of Cyberpunk 2077, it is still good to know there's a next-gen Witcher coming out in 2014. The plan is to release on PC, PS4 and other next-gen platforms (read Xbox 720) next spring. The role-playing genre is usually one that is rarely seen during the launch window - so it's good to know we have this one to look forward to.

The Witness
PS4 (timed exclusivity)
Developer: Jonathan Blow

Play movie

While The Witness is likely to appear on PC as well as PS4, Sony scored an interesting console exclusive indie title in Jonathan Blow's (Braid) The Witness. While the game may still come to both the next Xbox and Wii U at some point, if it proves a hit it's certainly a feather in Sony's cap as they try and make a bigger impact with small, creative, independent games (outside of the ones they fund themselves that is).

Assassin's Creed IV: Black Flag
PS4 (likely Xbox 720)
Developer: Ubisoft

It's been sort of confirmed that the next Assassin's Creed will hit PS4, and we assume it will also be available on the next Xbox (if Microsoft release it by the end of the year). Given the man power Ubisoft typically use to make a game in the series, it may even be one of the better looking titles released on next-gen around launch.

[Semi-Official/Rumoured]
This is a category of games we learned about when noone was allowed to utter the words PS4 or even mention next-gen. It also contains games that have sort of fallen off the radar and that we now assume are heading to next-gen.

Dragon Age III: Inquisition
Likely PS4 and Xbox 720
Developer: Bioware

The team at Bioware Montreal.

One of many games announced in 2012 where there was no mention of platforms. Suspicious? Very much so. The game makes use of EA's choice for next-gen engine Frostbite 2 - so let's assume this one is coming to both PS4 and Xbox 720. In development at Bioware proper (Edmonton) this game will likely be the first one released by studio following the departure of founders Muzyka and Zeschuk.

Next Mass Effect
Likely PS4 and Xbox 720
Developer: Bioware Montreal

"Don't call it Mass Effect 4." Well, okay Bioware - we'll call it the "Next Mass Effect" until you've come out with an official name, cause we're nice people. Expect this one to feature the same world and premise, but a new hero and storyline as the Shepard trilogy ended with Mass Effect 3. No platforms have been mentioned, but given that we're likely looking at a 2014 release for this (maybe even later) it is pretty much a lock. As with Dragon Age III: Inquisition it will make use of Frostbite 2.

Battlefield 4
Likely PS4 and Xbox 720
Developer: DICE

One day prior to Sony's PS4 presentation Gamestop boss J Paul Raines tweeted that he had seen Battlefield 4 and that it looked amazing. You don't typically see J Paul Raines tweeting about games he has seen in secret, and you wouldn't see DICE studio manager Karl-Magnus Troedsson retweet it if it a) wasn't true b) wasn't approved by EA. Rumours circulate that EA are going to partner up with Microsoft for next-gen, but I doubt EA will wander away from their principles of multi-platform releases. No, Battlefield 4 is likely coming this fall on current gen as well as next-gen. And we're likely to see it officially unveiled before long.

Metal Gear Solid: Ground Zeroes / The Phantom Pain
Likely PS4 and Xbox 720
Developer: Kojima Productions

Play movie

Hideo Kojima has been busy with his signature smoke and mirrors show leading up to a proper Metal Gear Solid unveiling. We did get to see Ground Zeroes and it looked like next-gen (running on PC), but is it Metal Gear Solid 5? And what about The Phantom Pain - the thinly disguised Metal Gear showing at Spike TV's Video Game Awards - is that Metal Gear Solid 5? We expect things to be made clear at E3 at the very latest...

This concludes our first part of this feature - the second part can be found over here.

Note: Naturally games like FIFA, Madden and probably NBA 2K14 and the new EA Sports UFC will make it onto PS4 and Xbox 720, and the same goes for things like Singstar (PS4) and Just Dance that we'll likely see as well. We focused our attention on core titles and fresh IP's for this text. If we've missed any games you feel deserve a mention, please make a comment below.
